NAACP Critical of School on MLK Holiday

NAACP President Kojo Nantambu blasted CMS superintendent Peter Gorman’s decision to make up a snow day on Dr. Martin Luther King’s Holiday.

“Once again Dr. Gorman has shown total disdain and disrespect for a very significant part of this community. He continues to demonstrate a blatant deliberate disconnect with the African American Community,” said Rev. Kojo Nantambu in a press release.

Nantambu argues CMS should choose another day

We’re Losing Our Children In The Street And Schools

By Tanya Wilson 360You Earlier this week, while watching the news, I was struck by two stories; despite them taking place in different states, they were connected by one theme ‘tragic’. My heart broke as I listened to a young female student, standing at the microphone in defense of the closing of Waddell High School, “We are already fighting for our lives; don’t make us fight for our education.” As I flipped the channel, my heart was broken even more as the Read More

CMS Board Votes To Close Waddell Not Harding

CMS Board Votes To Close Waddell Not Harding

The rancor during last night’s Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Board meeting rose to acrimonious levels as accusations of racism flew, rudeness prevailed and a few people were handcuffed. The board voted to close Waddell High and make it the new home for Smith Language Academy, a K-8 magnet. Harding High will turn into a neighborhood school housing many of Waddell’s students, along with the International Baccalaureate magnet now at Harding. Read the full story

Preparing For CMS School Closings Means Preparing Our Children

If all goes as planned, the vote concerning Charlotte Mecklenburg School closings will be over tonight. I have grown tired of reading and hearing that these cuts are not rooted in race, class, or politics. If that be the case, then why are the cuts concentrated in African American, low income areas? Why not diversify the cuts by spreading them across the entire footprint? While hoping for the best, preparation otherwise is needed. Litigation is an option; however, it is an option that may not Read More

CMS Black Students Outperform Peers In Wake County

CMS Black Students Outperform Peers In Wake County

VIA CHARLOTTE OBSERVER

These days most of the news coming from CMS has been negative, and sometimes down-right depressing. However, this week we have something to cheer about. Pass rates on high school exams rose from 76 to 79 percent in one year – and increased 85 percent counting retests. The four-year graduation rate rose from 66 to 70 percent.

CMS’s black, Hispanic and low-income students significantly outperformed there Wake County peers, the Observer reported. Until recently, they trailed Wake County

New Book Claims Integration Ruined Black Education

New Book Claims Integration Ruined Black Education

Author Stewart Buck has a new book, “Acting White: The Ironic Legacy Of Desegregation” in which he claims that integration has had a negative affect on African-American education. Richard Thompson Ford at Slate wrote this about the book:

It was desegregation that destroyed thriving black schools where black faculty were role models and nurtured excellence among black students. In the most compelling chapter of Acting White, Buck describes that process and the anguished reactions of the black students, teachers, and communities

Peter Gorman Hints At School Closures For Next Year

VIA CHARLOTTE OBSERVER.COM CMS School Superintendent Peter Gorman hinted at his strategy for closing schools in 2011-2012 on Wednesday. Gorman said he wouldn't necessarily merge underfilled and underperforming schools. Creating one bigger school with lots of students below grade level would hurt their chances at success, he told the Charlotte Observer. Gorman has said for weeks he expects to close at least 10 schools to save money in 2011-12. Read More

CMS Marathon Meetings This Week

CMS Marathon Meetings This Week

VIA CHARLOTTE OBSERVER

CMS kicked off nine days of intense community forums on Monday. People who attend any of the four forums were assigned to small groups to discuss the broad values that should guide a revamp of boundaries, magnets, busing and other issues connected with where kids go to school.

The big-picture talks are designed to help staff understand community values, says board Chair Eric Davis. That discussion will start by examining

School Cuts Would Affect Students In Class and On The Field

School Cuts Would Affect Students In Class and On The Field

VIA CHARLOTTE OBSERVER

Next year’s round of school spending cuts could mean more crowded classrooms, fewer bus stops, aging textbooks and fees to play football and other sports, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools officials say.

All of those steps would result from the $78.2 million CMS expects to lose in state and county money, Superintendent Peter Gorman said Wednesday.

“I expect the worst-case scenario,” Gorman said, referring to his proposal for dealing with the gap between what CMS is seeking and what cash-strapped Mecklenburg County
