Ron Artest has developed a reputation on the basketball court – for his playing and brawling skills.  Artest is regarded as as one of the league’s premier defenders; he won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2004. He was a major participant in the Pacers–Pistons brawl and is known for his sometimes eccentric, outspoken behavior.

In this video, Artest shows us another side. He’s funny and engaging as he discusses the past season and what he plans to do with his championship ring and how he wants to become a junior high school math teacher or record a song with Celine Dion.

I am never one for favorites; I like too many things to have them.  Chris Brown has tried to relieve me of that illness.  My favorite song these days is “Deuces.” The beat is sick and little Chris, Tyga and Kevin McCall know just how to work it.

For that reason Te has resisted being labeled a “conscious” rapper despite having album titles like The Minstrel Show.

“Just because I don’t rap about guns or pimpin’ doesn’t necessarily make me a better choice for your children to listen to,” says Te who has some verses that would make Trina and Plies blush. “That’s why the whole conscious rap thing we just kind of wanted to keep ourselves out of it. It didn’t represent the full scope of who we were.”

On August 3, 1983, Prince played a benefit concert at First Avenue, the Minneapolis club he would immortalize a year later in his film Purple Rain.  That same night, Prince debuted several new songs that would appear on the soundtrack to that film.

When the Purple Rain album was released, three of the performances from that night found their way on to the album.   The versions of “I Would Die 4 U,” “Baby I’m A Star” and “Purple Rain” on the album were taken from that performance and cleaned up and edited in the studio.

The Purple Rain album and film would launch Prince’s career to new heights and influenced countless musicians that came after him.  The-Dream, Usher, D’Angelo, and countless others all cite Prince as a huge influence on their music.

Watch these historical performances of “I Would Die 4 U,” “Baby I’m A Star” and “Purple Rain” from that night in 1983, and remember that these songs had never been heard before this night.

I was working yesterday and my son came over to my computer singing the Fat Albert theme song.  It made me reminisce about old school cartoons and children’s television shows – The Smurfs, Fraggle Rock, Jem and The Muppet Show.

So, this Flashback Friday we are going to take a ride down memory lane to a time when times were simpler (and we weren’t paying bills).
