Tireless Voice For Victims Is Finalist For Top Award

Mothers of Murdered Offspring co-founder Judy Williams is one of 20 finalists for Citizen Service Above Self Honors. Williams is one of 20 nominees for the nation’s highest civilian honor. Her son city councilman David Howard nominated her. He posted a note on Facebook last night announcing that his mother was a finalist.

The newly opened Charlotte Empowerment Zone in the Pressley Ridge Apartments, which started Jan. 26 with just 11 kids, represents Charlotte’s first attempt at re-creating New York City’s successful Harlem Children’s Zone, an educational initiative serving 17,000 children in a 100-city block area of Harlem.

In the dropout news, the droprate among CMS students was 5 percent down from 5.9 percent in the previous year. In school violence news, the rate rose from 8.7 per 1,000 to 9.8.
