My92.7’s Pat Cannon will be one of five people honored during the NAACP’s Freedom Fund Banquet on Aug. 21. Cannon is mayor pro-tem and a My92.7 personality. Since 2007, Cannon has hosted “Aiming With Cannon Live,” a weekly public affairs talk show. It broadcasts on Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Breast Cancer Fundraiser Kickoff Breakfast

The organizers of Making Strides Against Breast Cancer are hosting a kickoff breakfast next week. The event will give newcomers an opportunity to learn more about the fundraiser as well as talk to people in the community who have been affected by breast cancer. The organization celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet

The newly-resurrected Charlotte chapter of the NAACP will host a Freedom Fund Banquet on Aug. 21. The keynote speaker is Max Siegel, former NASCAR executive. The program includes a reception and a dinner and awards presentation. The attire is semi-formal.

Charlotte Caribbean Festival is Saturday

The annual Charlotte Caribbean Festival and Parade is a family-oriented cultural event with live entertainment, educational workshops, children’s activities, and authentic Caribbean cuisine. The Street Parade showcases colorful handmade costumes, authentic steel pan music and traditional dance performances.

Event: Andre Harrell At House of Jazz Tonight

Tonight kicks off the Charlotte edition of the Andre Harrell Superstar Soul, which goes down tomorrow at the House of Jazz. Come out tonight for the “Afterwork Black & White Party” at House of Jazz and meet some of the finalists. Fly Ty will host tonight, and music provided by DJ Stacey Blackman! Andre Harrell will be in the house along with the 50 invited finalists and their guests. This is a FREE event. The event is sponsored locally by Crown Royal Black.

Fourth of July Festivities

If you’re looking for a place to take the family for the Fourth of July head CPCC’s Memorial Stadium for the US Airways Family Festival Fun. The free event features live music, games and more. I attended to last year, and it was a great event. Vendors, children’s games and community organizations filled the centerfield. (The fried fish and french fries was a popular draw.) Bands played on a stage near the front of the stadium and people filled the stands. It reminded me of the Fourth of July celebrations I used to attend as a kid with my family. Good clean family fun, and a great fireworks display. The event is free, but parking in the adjacent lot is $5.

Lowe’s YMCA July 3 Summer Celebration

Let the kids roam free at inflatable bouncy houses and a rock wall, while you enjoy patriotic music from the Lake Norman orchestra and community choir on the front lawn of Lowe’s YMCA, 170 Joe V. Knox Avenue in Mooresville. The event will also feature for the first time a giant color “war,” where everyone will be given either red, white or blue glowsticks. Food vendors will be on site; no grills allowed. Bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy the fireworks, which will begin at dark. The event is free, but glowsticks for the color war cost $5. Charlotte Symphony Pops’ ‘Celebrate America’

On July 3, the Charlotte Symphony will perform a free “Celebrate America” program at SouthPark mall’s Symphony Park, on the corner of Barclay Downs Drive and Morrison Boulevard. This is the finale of the symphony’s summer pops program and will feature patriotic music. The prelude starts at 7:15 p.m. and the concert starts at 8 p.m., but arrive early with a blanket to stake out your spot. For more information: www.charlottesymphony.org.

U.S. National Whitewater Center’s Fourth of July Festival

Sing Fourth of July weekend away with eight bands and musical artists, including Acoustic Syndicate, Simplified and Eric Lindell. The Fourth of July Festival, sponsored by Coke Zero, will take place at the U.S. National Whitewater Center, 5000 Whitewater Center Parkway. The musical festivities begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. on Sunday.. Fireworks will start at dark on both days. The event is free to attend. Parking costs $5. This time Shaq Diesel is hitting the race track again Dale Earnhardt Jr. On Wednesday, the two will hit the track at Concord Speedway. The two stars will negotiate the terms of the race the day of. The event is begin taped for upcoming season of Shaq Vs, the reality competition show that debuted last year returns and features Shaq going head to head with some of the professional sports world’s elite.
