I grew up in a home where music was much like food – it was needed for daily survival. My mother was a huge fan of Whitney Houston. From the moment Whitney hit the music scene we were bombarded with her in my home.  I remember the conversations my mother and I would have while listening to Whitney Houston songs. It was in those moments I learned that my mother was not only my mother, but also an individual with feelings and emotions. I cherish those moments to this day because it allowed me to learn to respect the woman and not just the protector and provider.

As I grew older and had experiences of my own, I learned to respect Whitney’s songs even more.  As a professional, I watched charted her career and realized the value of branding and personal image.

I also watched her unfortunate demise, but as I watch her laid to rest tomorrow, I will not remember the downfall of Whitney Houston. I will remember the good times she was there for (not in person, but in spirit) during my life and what her life has taught me about my own successes and failures. I will remember her as a hero.

Rest in peace Ms. Houston.
